Box Score BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team fell to Mary Washington, 80-73, Wednesday night at Knight Arena.
Trey Dill led the Knights (1-21, 0-7 CAC) in scoring for the second consecutive game with 18 points while also collecting a team-high seven rebounds. Sam Armstrong scored 16 points with five rebounds while Ricky Stafford paced the bench with 15 points and six assists. Greg Rowson and Da'Shawn Cook each scored 18 to lead the Eagles (13-9, 3-4 CAC) while Wayne Clevert and Riley Welch poured in 15 and 14 from the bench.
The Eagles shot out to a 12-5 lead in the opening five minutes of play before Southern Virginia went on a 7-2 run capped off a George Howe three to pull the Knights within two, 14-12, with 12:41 remaining in the half. The Knights trailed 28-19 with just over five minutes left in the half before Mary Washington closed out the half on a 16-5 run to head into the break leading 44-24.
Southern Virginia's offense shot 36 percent (9-for-25) from the field while going 33.3 percent (4-for-12) from the three-point line. Mary Washington held the advantage at the half on the boards (17-11) and forced nine Knights turnovers. Dill led Southern Virginia with six points while Welch led the Eagles with 11.
The Knights slowly chipped away at the Eagles' lead, Calvin Seamons connected from deep on a pass from Armstrong to pull Southern Virginia within 13, 60-47, with 8:49 left in the game. The Knights cut the lead to single digits on an Armstrong three with 5:01 left, now down 67-58. After another Southern Virginia defensive stop, Stafford found Dill for a potential three-point play after making the basket and drawing the foul. Dill then knocked down the free-throw to pull the team within six, 67-61.
Following an Eagles three down 70-61, Armstrong and Dill in back-to-back possessions connected from deep on assists from Seamons to pull Southern Virginia within three, 70-67 with 2:32 left in the game. Mary Washington halted the Knights' momentum after completing a three-point play to hold the 73-67 advantage. The Knights cut the lead to four with under a minute remaining but were unable to complete the comeback falling 80-73.
Southern Virginia shot 52.9 percent (18-for-34) from the field and 42.1 percent (8-for-19) from three while holding the Eagles to 34.5 percent (10-for-29) from the floor and 33.3 percent (5-for-15) from deep. The Knights outrebounded UMW 18-15 for the half.
For the game, the Knights outshot the Eagles 45.8 percent (27-for-59) to 42.6 percent (26-for-61) from the floor while also outscoring them in the paint (22-12). Mary Washington edged the Knights on the glass (37-32), 2nd chance points (12-8), and bench scoring (30-28).
Southern Virginia will now travel to face Salisbury Saturday, Feb. 8, at 3 p.m.
