Box Score HIGH POINT, N.C. — The Southern Virginia University baseball team won its season-opener 10-8 against Greensboro College Friday night at BB&T Point Park.
Trailing 7-4 going to the top half of the seventh inning, the Knights (1-0) scored five runs taking its first lead of the game 9-7 and held on for its first win of the 2020 season. Ryan Morin led off the frame on an error to begin the rally. Cole Critchfield followed with a walk to advance Morin to second. After a wild pitch and Morin now on third, freshman Will Parker came through with a pinch-hit double scoring Morin and moving Critchfield to third. The next batter, Bridger Taylor doubled scoring Critchfield and advancing the other runner putting Southern Virginia within one, 7-6.
The inning continued with Canon Anderson then connected with the ball for the team's third consecutive double scoring, both Taylor and Parker, for the lead. Mitch Tyse finished off the big inning for the Knights with a single to center to score Anderson to lead 9-7.
The Knights extended their lead in the top of the ninth on Riley Daniels' fourth hit of the game with a single to center scoring Anderson, now leading 10-7. The Pride (0-1) attempted to cut into the deficit scoring a run in their last at-bats, but Southern Virginia withstood the run and earned the 10-8 victory.
Curtis Drake earned the win in relief in his first collegiate appearance, tossing four innings, allowing one run and picking up a pair of strikeouts. Starter Jonny Soto worked 4.2 innings allowing four runs and striking out one. Also, getting work out of the bullpen was Grady Rasmussen (0.1 IP, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K).
Chenzo Scanio suffered the loss surrendering two runs on four hits in one inning for the Pride. Starter Parker Strader allowed four earned runs on nine hits with a walk and seven punch outs in 5.1 innings.
The Knights struck first, taking an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Morin started things off with a triple to right-center and was then followed by Critchfield singling to center pushing Moring across. The Pride responded in their first opportunity, scoring two runs to claim a 2-1 lead after one.
Southern Virginia tied the game 2-all with two outs and one runner in scoring position. After a Cole Campanile double, Brady Lamb laced a shot into left field, scoring Campanile.
Greensboro scored three runs over the next three innings while managing to hold the Knights scoreless. The Knights broke the three-innings of silence at the top of the sixth frame started by a Daniels RBI double, and a Campanile sacrifice fly scored Tyse from third to bring Southern Virginia within one, trailing 5-4. The Pride then went on two add two more runs, capitalizing off an error by the Knights scoring one and later by a Hunter Curtis single for a 7-4 Greensboro lead.
Southern Virginia tallied 15 hits on the night. Daniels led the way going 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Critchfield was 3-for-4 with a run, RBI, and a walk. Tyse rounded out the Knights with multiple hits going 2-for-4 with an RBI while Anderson added two RBIs and three runs.
The Knights continue its series against the Pride tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 8, with a doubleheader set for 1 and 4 p.m.
