Box Score 2 HIGH POINT, N.C. — The Southern Virginia University baseball team fell 9-2 in game one of today's doubleheader and then followed with a 12-2 game two win to take the series over Greensboro 2-1 at BB&T Point Park.
Game 1
The Pride (1-2) started the day scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first frame to take an early 2-0 lead.
After a scoreless second inning by both teams, Greensboro pushed its lead to 3-0 on a Scotty McGuire single up the middle that scored Chance Bryant.
Southern Virginia's (2-1) offense did not get on the board until the final frame of the game in the top of the ninth after the Pride tacked on six more runs to take a demanding 9-0 lead.
The Knights' Riley Daniels got on base with a lead-off walk followed by a Cole Campanile single to right field.
Following a fielder's choice, Ryan Morin walked to load the bases. Cole Critchfield then grounded out but managed to drive in Daniels from third. The next batter, Jonny Soto singled scoring Brady Lamb, but the rally fell short, handing the Pride the 9-2 victory.
Will Parker suffered the loss surrendering three runs (two earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Preston Pettit (0.2 IP, 2 Hs, 2 BBs, 3 ER), Nolan Opp (0.2 IP, 3 Hs, 3 ER), and Tanner Stocking (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1K) also worked innings for the Knights out of the bullpen.
Jared Cenal picks up the win for the Pride going five innings while allowing seven hits and collecting two punch outs.
The Knights tallied 12 hits led by Morin (3-for-4) and followed by Bridger Taylor (2-for-5) and Campanile (2-for-3). Bryant registered three hits for the Pride, who finished with 13 for the game.
Game 2
Southern Virginia showcased its offensive talent in game two of the doubleheader.
After a double by Morin, Critchfield singled to left-center to score Morin for a 1-0 lead after the top of the first frame. The Pride answered back with a Hunter Curtis solo homer to left field tying the game 1-1.
Following three scoreless innings, the Knights offense exploded in the top of the fifth inning scoring five runs to claim a 6-1 advantage. Soto drove in the first run of the inning with a single to right, and then Taylor hit a double that scored two runners. Canon Anderson then hit into a sacrifice fly but still managed to score Soto. The final run of the inning came off the bat of Mitch Tyse with a single to left scoring Taylor.
Southern Virginia's hot bats continued into the sixth inning, as the team tallied five hits, producing five runs. The Knights capitalized on a pair of wild pitches scoring two runs while Critchfield recorded an RBI on a single. Taylor two batters later hit his second double of the game, scoring two, extending the lead to 11-1.
Greensboro scored their last run of the game in the bottom of the sixth frame on a Cameron Peters single to center scored McGuire making the score 11-2.
The Knights' last run came in the top of the seventh when Soto hit into a fielder's choice that scored Brady Lamb from third, giving them the ten-run and final score of 12-2.
Daniels earns his first win of the season, tossing five frames where he allowed two hits, three walks, one run, and two strikeouts. Paul Steiger made his debut on the mound for the Knights, going three innings allowing four hits, one walk, and one run. Zach Zalar tossed a scoreless ninth inning allowing a hit, one walk while earning one K in his first appearance of 2020.
Eli Moravick picks up the loss for the Pride after 4.2 innings allowing eight hits and six runs while collecting four Ks.
Southern Virginia had seven different players record multiple hits totaling 18 hits as a team. Critchfield led the team with a perfect day (4-for-4) with two RBIs and a walk. Morin, Soto, Taylor, Tyse, Lamb, and Grady Rasmussen each collected two hits while Taylor led the team with three RBIs.
The Knights will now travel to play crosstown rivals Washington and Lee Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 3:30 p.m.
