Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — The Southern Virginia University baseball team dropped a 10-4 decision to Washingtonton and Lee on Tuesday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Knights (9-5), after taking a 1-0 lead off a Generals (10-3) error in the top of the first inning, surrendered three runs in the bottom half of the inning trailing 3-1. W&L extended its lead 5-1 in the bottom of the second inning, and the Knights were never able to make up the deficit.
Trailing 5-1 heading into the top of the third frame, Southern Virginia received a spark from Mitch Tyse homering to left field, scoring Canon Anderson, who was on first following a leadoff single, cutting the lead to two, 5-3. The homer extends Tyse's home run streak to four games and is his sixth of the season.
The Knights pulled within one, 5-4, scoring a run in the sixth inning. Cole Critchfield singled through the right side before Anderson doubled to right field scoring Critchfield from first. The Knights ended the inning, leaving Anderson as the game-tying run stranded on third base.
Washington and Lee tacked on four runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to cap the scoring at 10-4.
The loss today splits the season series between the two crosstown rivals 1-1, as the Knights previously won back on Mar. 4, 10-9.
Riley Daniels takes the loss surrendering five runs (four earned) on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts in four innings. Southern Virginia used Will Parker (3.0 IP, 4 R) and Zach Zalar (1.0 IP, 1 R) in relief.
Mason Shuffer earned the win tossing seven innings, allowing four runs (three earned), allowing nine hits and striking out six. Peyton McCann worked a scoreless eighth and ninth innings with two walks, one hit, and a strikeout.
Catcher Cole Campanile led the Knights at the plate collecting three hits (3-for-4) and a walk. Anderson was the other Southern Virginia player to have multiple hits with two (2-for-5) and an RBI. Critchfield, Tyse, Parker, Jonny Soto, and Brady Lamb also registered base knocks.
The Knights return home to host Thomas Nelson CC Friday, Mar. 13 slated for a 2 p.m. start.
