Knights Earn Road Victory Over Generals 10-9

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Southern Virginia University baseball team defeated crosstown rivals Washington & Lee University, 10-9, Wednesday night at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

Cole Critchfield led the Knights (9-3) tallying four hits, including two doubles and a pair of RBIs while Mitch Tyse led the team with three RBIs and a homer. Bridger Taylor also posted a multiple-hit game with a triple and two RBIs.

Riley Daniels earns the win to improve to 4-1 on the season going 1.2 innings, allowing four hits, two runs, two walks, and two Ks. Soto started for the Knights tossing six innings, surrendering four runs (one earned) on six hits while picking up a pair of strikeouts. Will Parker also saw time in relief in 0.2 innings while Tyse collects the save, his first of the season.

Kenneth Hartzfeld is handed the loss in 2.1 innings pitched, allowing four hits, three runs, two walks, and three punch outs.

Southern Virginia struck first in the top of the second, taking an early 4-0 lead. With one out, Tyse stepped to the box and homered to left field, earning his fourth of the season, taking a 1-0 advantage. The next three Southern Virginia batters loaded the bases with Soto at the plate. Soto went on to walk in a run, increasing the lead to 2-0. Critchfield then hit a single scoring the run from third and keeping the bases loaded. The Knights added one more run on the inning off the bat of Parker scoring Brady Lamb.

After a quick 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the second, Southern Virginia's Cole Campanile drove in a run in the top of the third inning with two outs on a single down the left-field line scoring Daniels to now lead 5-0.

The Generals (8-2) came alive in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs to trail 5-4. After a leadoff single and a costly Knight error and a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, Jackson Gazin tripled to left-centerfield scoring both runs, 5-2. With two outs, Jason Volpicelli doubled to left scoring Gazin from third. Ryan Monson then singled down the right-field line scoring Volpicelli.

At the top of the fourth inning and one out, Parker and Bridger Taylor each walked before Tyse continued his strong night doubling to left-center scoring both baserunners. The Knights ended the innings leading now 7-4.

Both teams were then unable to score again until the top of the seventh inning. Southern Virginia's Critchfield doubled to left field scoring Lamb who had previously got on base after drawing a walk to now holding an 8-4 advantage.

The Generals again responded in the bottom frame of the seventh, recording three runs to trail once again by one, 8-7. Following a Chapin Bassi Walk and a Gazin single, Zach Perkins brought home a run before being thrown out at first. The next two W&L batters walked to put runners on first and second with one out when John Raymond singled to right-center bringing home both runners.

W&L continued its comeback in the bottom of the eighth started by a Jack Giardino triple. Bassi, the next hitter, then grounded to short, scoring Giardino tying the game 8-8.

Heading into the final inning of play with the Knights tied 8-8, Critchfield recorded his fourth hit of the game on a double to center field. Will Parker followed, reaching first on a dropped third strike that also advanced Critchfield to third. Taylor then hit a triple to left-center scoring both Parker and Critchfield to put the Knights up 10-8.

In their last chance at the plate, the Generals started with singles from Volpicelli and Monson, giving them the game-winning run stepping into the box. The Knights picked up its first out of the inning on a grounder to the pitcher and then walked the next batter to load the bases with one out. Luke Erdmann cut the W&L deficit to one after being patient at the plate to score a run (10-9). With Tyse on the mound for Southern Virginia, he struck out the next batter looking and then forced Brian Wickman to ground out to third to seal the victory for the Knights.

Both teams totaled 11 hits in the game with Critchfield, Tyse, and Taylor with extra-base hits for the Knights. Three other Southern Virginia players had hits in the contest in Parker, Daniels, and Campanile.

The Knights will now host Alfred State Saturday, Mar. 7 with the first pitch set for 2 p.m.
