Box Score BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse game extended its winning streak to five games with a 22-12 victory over Rhodes College.
Offensively for the Knights (6-1), Ty Veres scored a career-high seven goals on the afternoon for seven total points. Tennison Schmidt followed Veres with six points in the form of four goals and two assists. Zach Danneman ended his day with five points on four goals and one assist.
Defensively for Southern Virginia, goalkeeper Dalon Hampshire locked down the defense with 14 saves on 26 shots on goal. Defensive midfielder Shawn Lamb had his best game of the season with four caused turnovers and seven ground balls. Landon Malais recorded a game-high 12 ground balls while going 22-for-28 on faceoffs.
Rhodes (5-1) started off the scoring with an Addison Mueller unassisted goal to put the Lynx up 1-0 with 11:32 remaining in the first. The Knights confidently responded with two unanswered unassisted goals by Danneman and Chandler Wescott to go up 2-1. Ryan Dancy of Rhodes got free from his defender and tied the game up two apiece with an unassisted goal. Southern Virginia used another 3-0 run led by two Schmidt goals to make the new score 5-2 with 3:00 remaining in the quarter. Following a Lynx goal by Christian Cisneros, Veres added two consecutive goals to go into the second quarter of play with the 7-3 lead.
Starting off the second quarter, Rhodes scored the first two goals to cut its deficit to two 7-5 with 13:13 left in the first half. Southern Virginia capitalized on its first extra-man opportunity with an S. Lamb goal followed by an unassisted Danneman goal to go up four goals 9-5 with 11:16 on the clock. After a Lynx unassisted goal by Ryan Dancy, the Knights closed out the first half with three unanswered goals led by two Veres goals.
At the break, Southern Virginia held the 12-6 lead led by four Veres goals. The Knights outshot the Lynx in the first half 44-20 while converting on one of two extra-man opportunities. Southern Virginia won the ground ball battle 23-18 and went 13-for-18 at the faceoff x.
The Knights kept their momentum going in the third quarter opening with four unanswered goals, which included Malais' first career goal to make the new score 16-6 with 9:23 on the clock. Rhodes ended the third quarter outscoring Southern Virginia 6-3 to head into the fourth quarter of play with the new score 19-12.
The defense for the Knights held steady in the fourth quarter holding the Lynx scoreless. Danneman added his fourth goal of the game after creating space from his defender, making the score 20-12 with 13:45 left in the game. S. Lamb recorded his third goal of the game off a Danneman assist, and Carter Bean scored the final goal of the game to lock in the 22-12 victory.
Southern Virginia ended the game, winning 71 percent at the faceoff x while outshooting Rhodes 76-41. The Knights dominated the ground ball battle with a 50-35 advantage on the day. Southern Virginia ended the day going 20-for-22 on the clear.
The Knights continue their season with a neutral site game against Merchant Marine Academy in Newport News, Va. The opening faceoff is set for 11 a.m.
