Southern Virginia Women's Volleyball Rolls Past Eastern Mennonite in Non-Conference Matchup

BUENA VISTA, VA. — Taking a brief pause from conference competition, the Southern Virginia University Women's Volleyball team took on Eastern Mennonite University in Knight Arena Tuesday night. Strong serving carried the Knights to a four set victory, taking down the Royals 3-1.
 
Sydney Hopkin led all players with 15 kills, followed by Courtney Pinkston with 13. Sage Matheny and Ashley Torbenson stood strong from the service line, recording four aces apiece while Emma Steiger anchored the defense with 26 digs. At the net, Jilane Pedersen and Brenna Clyde dominated with five blocks each.
 
How It Happened:
Southern Virginia came out swinging from the beginning of the match, jumping ahead to a 9-3 lead, led by three Ashley Torbenson aces. After exchanging points, the Knights closed out the first set with ten unanswered points, led by two kills from Sydney Hopkin and Courtney Pinkston. Southern Virginia took the first set 25-12 and the 1-0 lead in the match.
 
The Knights followed the same script of the first set to start out the second, using three consecutive service aces from Jessica Ensley to gain a comfortable 10-2 lead. Five points later, Pinkston sparked a 7-2 scoring run to race ahead 19-7 before a final service error by the Royals wrapped up the second, giving Southern Virginia the 2-0 lead in the match with the 25-14 set win.
 
After a brief set back in the third, the Knights regained their composure in the final set, utilizing two aces from Sage Matheny to ahead 13-9 and not look back. Both teams traded points before a final three-point spurt by the Knights, topped off by a monster block from Brenna Clyde and Ashley Torbenson, locked in the 3-1 victory for the team.
 
Up Next:
Southern Virginia remains home on Thursday, October 20, resuming conference play with a showdown against Salem College in Knight Arena. Game time is set for 6 pm.
