GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Southern Virginia University women's swim team dropped a tight one against a talented Gettysburg side on Saturday, falling 118-85.
The women's team had six individual wins with Kelsie Drennen, Jamie Horne and Riley Mortensen having two each. There were also five school records broken between the three of them. "These girls showed up BIG," exclaimed head coach
Jennifer Moore. "I'm so proud of them."
The team got its first victory of the day in the very first meet, the 200 yard medley relay. The relay team consisted of Kelsie Drennen,
Rachel Draper, Jamie Horne and
Cenedra Hooley who finished with a time of 1:54.10, a new Southern Virginia record and over four seconds faster than the next team.
Mortensen earned her first individual triumph in the 1000 freestyle, the longest event of the meet. Her 11:18.10 broke a school record and earned the team nine points.
In the 50 yard free the Knights got another nine points after Horne's 25.16 earned first place. Her time broke a program record.
Drennen got her first individual win of the meet in the 100 butterfly. Drennen's 59.66 time would be the third school record broken in meet and her third individual program best time this season.
The following women's event, the 100 free, saw Horne get her third overall victory and break her second record of the day.
"It's a great feeling to break a school record," stated Horne. "After so much hard work it's very rewarding to see it pay off. I'm excited to continue to train and see what the rest of the season has to offer."
The 100 yard backstroke was a nail-biter featuring Kelsie Drennen and Mia Yancey for the Bullets. Drennen's split was less than a tenth faster than Yancey's and they would stay neck and neck throughout the entire race. Drennen would get the better of Yancey, winning by just over a tenth of a second for her third overall victory of the meet.
Long distance swimmer, Riley Mortensen, earned her second conquest of the day in the 500 free. She would finish with a 5:31.45 time, breaking her own school record set in the first meet of the year by five seconds.
In the final event of the meet, the 400 yard freestyle relay, the Knights would finish second and earn four points. The relay team of Kylie Echols, Sienna Christensen,
Emily Lesue and Mortensen finished with a 4:01.15.
"The whole team looks great and is swimming well," continued coach Moore.
Southern Virginia will host its final home meet of the season against Sweet Briar on Friday, November 4 at the Rockbridge Aquatics Center. The meet is set to begin at 6 p.m. with the seniors being honored just before.
