Southern Virginia Dominates Sweet Briar on Senior Night

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Southern Virginia University women's swim team defeated Sweet Briar College Friday, 115-53. The seniors on the team, Ellie Tomlinson and Kelsie Drennen, were honored in what was the final home meet of the campaign.

In the first event of the meet, the 200 yard medley relay, the team comprised of Shandrey Allman, Emily Lesue, Jamie Horne and Rachel Draper would get to the wall first. Horne's butterfly and Draper's freestyle would stretch the team's lead to secure the victory.

The longest race of the evening, the 1000 yard freestyle, would give Draper her second overall triumph of the evening, finishing with a time of 12:13.22.

The Knights would have the first and second finishers in the next event, the 200 free, with Riley Mortenson just edging out teammate Cenedra Hooley.

In the shortest race of the meet, the 50 freestyle, Southern Virginia would again finish first and second. Mortenson, in her second consecutive event, would finish just a half a second behind Kylie Echols.

Jamie Horne had a great start in the 200 yard individual medley, building an early lead with a strong butterfly. In the next leg, Sienna Christensen, would cut the lead. Horne would have a solid final back half of the race to come away with the victory with Christensen finishing in second.

Kelsie Drennen would dominate the next event, the 200 butterfly, finishing with a time of 2:11.65, a new school record.

Cece Hooley's great start in the 100 yard free would help her secure the victory, reaching the wall in 58.28.

In the 200 yard backstroke, Sienna Christensen got the early lead and would hold onto the advantage throughout the entirety of the race to secure her first individual victory of the night.

Emily Lesue got out to an early lead in the 500 freestyle and never looked back. Her 6:07.97 was good for first place.

"I walked in to the meet not being super excited, but by the first race I was ready to have fun and swim my hardest," said Lesue. "I swam different events at this meet and it was fun to change things up! This team's energy is so much fun! I'm excited to swim fast with this team the rest of the season!"

In the final individual race of the meet, the 200 yard breaststroke, Rachel Draper would top Jillian Lewis from Sweet Briar to earn her third victory.

The last event of the night, the 400 free relay, the team of Ellie Tomlinson, Riley Mortensen, Jamie Horne and Emily Lesue would close out the meet with a win, reaching the wall in 4:03.03.

"I thought today's meet was really fun but also productive," exclaimed Kylie Echols. "Today I was able to 'Swim Happy', just like my dad always says! I'm glad to have good teammates to compete with."

Southern Virginia will have two weeks to prepare for the Pacer Invitational in Cary, North Carolina. The two-day event begins Friday, November 18.
