BUENA VISTA, Va. – Following the third overtime triumph of the campaign, the Southern Virginia University men's basketball team (4-3) will play its fourth consecutive home game against Randolph College (3-7) on Saturday, Dec. 10.
Since the 2017-18 season, the teams have squared off four times with each program earning two wins. Last year, the Marchant brothers combined for 40 points - Conner with a game-high 22 and Isaiah with 18 - to lead the Knights to a 10 points victory.
Scottie Ziegner also had one of his best performances of his senior season, tallying 13 points and grabbing a game-high seven boards.
The WildCats will rely heavily on the seasoned backcourt duo of Danny Bickey and Jordan Phillips-McLoyd to put points on the board. Bickey leads the team, averaging 17.1 points per game, with Phillips-McLoyd is just behind him with 15.8. The two benefit from the ball movement of Junior Cole Perry who leads the team in assists with 3.8 per game and is the catalyst for the WildCats offense. Perry is also the teams leading rebounder, hauling down over six boards per contest.
Randolph has a lot of experienced players on its roster and especially in its starting five. Of the four players who have started every game this season for the WildCats, there is just one underclassman, Hunter Verling, a sophomore, who is joined by two juniors, a senior and a graduate student.
In contrast, Southern Virginia's starting lineup has consisted of mostly freshman. Although four of the five starters are freshman, they have shown their maturity time and again. That has been proven in the overtime games this season, with the Knights coming out on top in all three.
In last week's overtime triumph over Ferrum, Southern Virginia went down early in the extra period, but freshman
Shaun Kenedy got the team together, showing his maturity and leadership. "After they went up early in overtime, I gathered the guys together to remind them that we have been in that situation before and that there was plenty of time to get back in the game as long as we stuck together and played connected," said Kenedy.
"They honestly have been very impressive," added the lone upperclassman in the starting lineup, Kai Olson. "They understand that they are younger than most of the teams we play against, but at the same time they know that they won't be outworked."
Kenedy and Olson are joined by
Koa Baker as the Knights top three scorers, with the three combining for 45 points per game and will carry the lion's share of offensive production against the WildCats. Fellow starters,
Abe Connolly and
Jamarcus Robertson, will look to get hot from behind the arc, while
Bryan Tapia,
Dane Ibsen and
Tyler Kartchner will be looked upon to continue to rely a spark for the team off the bench.
"Randolph is a good, physical team," declared head coach
Adam Wardenburg. "We have to play connected on both ends of the floor to come away victorious."
