BUENA VISTA, VA. — The Southern Virginia University football team is set to take on Wilmington (OH) in the team's season, and home opener on Thursday, September 1, at 7 pm in Knight Stadium.
When speaking with Head Coach Ed Mulitalo, he expressed that there was "trust among all of the players," with a good mix of returning players who know the system, and several first-year players who will look to make a strong, immediate impact to the team.
The Series
The Knights and the Quakers meet for the second time in program history, with Southern Virginia holding the 1-0 lead.
The teams met last year, where the Knights came away with the 41-34 overtime victory, led by
Davis Pinkston's record-breaking 355 passing yards and
Bishope Apodaca's 15 total tackles.
After falling behind 20-6, Pinkston connected with
Chase Wester for a 52-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to seven points, 20-13, just before the half.
With just over six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Knights knotted the game up at 34, following a one-yard rushing touchdown by
Jacob Wood.
In overtime, Southern Virginia grabbed their first lead of the game following a
Cade Nelson one-yard rushing touchdown, pushing the team ahead 41-34.
The Knights' defense held their ground on the ensuing drive, denying four scoring opportunities at their own three-yard line. A final incomplete pass on fourth down by the Quakers locked in the victory for the Knights.
