Southern Virginia Rugby Dominates in Season Opener

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University Rugby team began their season with a dominant win this afternoon against James Madison University, ending with a final score of 98-0.

It didn't take long for the Knights to get on the board, scoring their first try in the sixth minute of the game. There was a great play by Aminio Manu who faked a pass to get by a defender and then found Michael Golden streaking down the sideline who caught the ball and took it all the way to the try zone.

After the Knights' second try of the game, scored by Taniela Faletau, Aminio Manu returned the ensuing drop kick by JMU back for a try, weaving his way through multiple defenders.

In the second quarter Southern Virginia continued their commanding play, scoring five tries, including two from Nathaniel Roeback, pushing the score to 66-0 at the half.

The second half was controlled by the Knights who added five more tries and a penalty which was kicked by O'Shea Settle who executed well in the kicking game, completing nine conversions of his 11 opportunities.

Coach Smyth had this to say after the game, "I thought the boys competed well today for a first time out. We saw some good things but there is also room for improvement. I'm happy to have the first game behind us and look forward to what lies ahead. We have a pretty tight group of players and they are working hard."

The Knights will continue their season next Saturday, September 10, in Annapolis, Maryland when they take on the US Naval Academy in a rematch from last year's battle.
