BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's soccer team returns home to get their second week of regular season competitions underway on Wednesday when they take on Randolph College at 7 p.m.
Southern Virginia will hope to get a boost from the home crowd Wednesday night when the Wildcats travel to Knight Stadium for the third ever matchup between the schools. Randolph College grabbed wins in the first two matchups, including a 4-1 victory over the Knights last season.
The Knights currently have a 0-1-1 record, tying the first against Averett and dropping the second to Randolph-Macon, but they expect to build on promising play from their newcomers.
Randolph comes into the game with a 1-1 record, losing to USA South Athletic Conference member William Peace and then defeating Greensboro. Both matches were low scoring affairs, with the Wildcats only finding the back of the net once and only giving up one goal so far this season.
The Knights will hope to apply pressure to the opposing defense and force Zach Aylor, goalkeeper for the Wildcats, to make saves. Aylor, a senior from Vinton, Virginia, has only stopped five shots on goal this season.
Capitalizing on scoring chances will be key for the Knights who are averaging just under eight shots per game with over 50% of those shots being on goal.
On the other end, Southern Virginia goalkeepers have made 17 saves – nine by
Dallin Chappell against Averett and eight by
Sean Gutzman against Randolph-Macon, both solid performances.
In front of the goalkeepers, the midfield and defense will try to apply more pressure on the ball to limit the number of attempts on goal for the Wildcats.
