BUENA VISTA, VA. — Vice President and Director of Athletics, Deidra Dryden, has announced a strategic transition within its Rugby program, reflecting the institution's commitment to fostering excellence in athletics and leadership.
David Smyth, the accomplished head coach of the university's Rugby team, is embarking on a new chapter as the Director of Rugby. In this elevated role, Coach Smyth will focus on recruiting top-tier talent to ensure the sustained growth and strength of the team while maintaining the seamless functioning of the team's overall structure.
Coach Smyth's track record of dedication and success has laid the foundation for this transition. Under his guidance, Southern Virginia's Rugby program has flourished, becoming a force to be reckoned with on the field. "I'm excited to take on this new challenge and contribute to the program's continued success from a broader perspective," Coach Smyth shared. "Recruiting is a pivotal element in shaping the team's future, and I'm committed to bringing in exceptional athletes who align with our values and vision."
Stepping into the role of Co-Head Coaches are Aidyn and Marshall Ferris, each bringing their unique expertise and passion to the forefront. Aidyn Ferris, hailing from the American and New Zealand rugby landscapes, has an impressive resume reflecting his dedication to the sport. His experience ranges from coaching the Utah Warriors Selects in the 2023 Season to guiding the American Fork Cavemen, where the team made it to the Junior Varsity Finals and the Varsity Semi-Finals. His time with the Utah Saints Rugby and participation as Prop in various teams, such as the Life West University and the Northland Taniwha in New Zealand, have cultivated his deep understanding of scrumming, lineouts, and defensive patterns.
On the other hand, Marshall Ferris continues to bring a rich rugby legacy to the team. With a lineage rooted in coaching excellence, Marshall's upbringing immersed him in the world of rugby from a young age. His grandfather's leadership with the first Maori All Blacks team to travel outside New Zealand and his father's extensive coaching experience at the international level have been instrumental in shaping his coaching philosophy. "Rugby is more than a sport for me; it's in my blood. Coaching has always been a natural calling," expressed Marshall Ferris. His journey from assistant coaching roles to becoming the Head Coach of the Life West Women's 7s team and involvement with various teams, including Danville Oaks high school club and Life West Women's 15s side, has fortified his expertise and leadership qualities.
"We are excited to have Marshall and Aidyn working together," stated Dryden. "They have been immersed in world-class rugby their entire lives as players and coaches. We are also excited Coach Smyth will continue to mentor our coaches and guide our rugby program through recruiting."
