Lexington, Va - The Southern Virginia Men's and Women's Track and Field teams made a short trip to Lexington for the two day meet hosted by Washington and Lee, marking their first competition of the outdoor season.Â
Both teams had impressive performances for their first meet of the season, they were dominant in essentially every event area and proved they are ready to defend their conference championships in pursuit of a three-peat. In total, the women grabbed 25 top 10 finishes while the men had 21, breaking six school records in the process. There were several headline worthy performances on day one, specifically in the men's hammer throw where three Knights broke the school record on separate occasions. At the time of his throw, Owen Smiley established a new school record of 41.47 meters (136' 0"), but his teammate, CJ Davidson edged that record with his throw of 41.60 (136' 5"). Derek Lionberger would get the last say when he launched his final attempt to a distance of 43.67 meters (143' 3"), the throw would land him a 7th place finish and secure the school record. Dylan May would join in on the school record fun in the final event of day one, the men's 10,000 meter run. His time of 31:34 helped him earn a 2nd place finish in the event despite the lights shutting off in the final laps of the race. It turned into a unique event when spectators pointed flashlights towards the track surface to allow runners to complete the race safely.
School records continued to be in jeopardy on day two, highlighted by Joseph and Ethan Hughes in the 800 meters where they finished 1st and 2nd in the event. The brothers, from Las Vegas, Nevada, were competing for the second consecutive day after impressive showings in the 1500 on Friday. Joseph Hughes led the charge in the 800 before Ethan Hughes made a late push to grab the win in a time of 1:56.34, a new school record. Joseph was also under the previous school record with his time of 1:56.61.Â
Folole Torres produced a superb performance in the women's 400 meter hurdles with her time of 1:06.49, good enough for third place overall. She dominated her heat on her way to a school record and squashed her previous personal best by almost 3 seconds. Lia Savage would bring home 2nd place in the women's 200 meter dash with her time of 26.21 seconds, #2 on the program's all-time list. Fellow freshman Tessa Miller continued to impress as she broke the school record in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.76, she finished 2nd in the event as well.
Both men's and women's teams will continue competition next weekend at the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The meet will consist of teams from all levels and is hosted by Division l member Winthrop University.
