Flanders, NJ - In the cold conclusion of the Garden State Collegiate Classic, the Southern Virginia University women's golf team showcased their resilience and determination, securing a commendable 3rd place finish out of 10 competing teams. The day was marked by impressive performances and notable improvements from several key players.
Sydney Richards continued to lead the charge for the Knights, finishing tied for 3rd place after carding a solid 78, ending the day at +5. Despite facing tough competition and challenging conditions, Richards displayed remarkable grit and determination throughout the round.
Quinn Shupe encountered a few hurdles on day two, ultimately finishing tied for 8th place. Despite the challenges, Shupe's resilience helped contribute to her top ten finish.
Meanwhile, Halle Western, Ellie Billings, and Maura Hawkes showed significant improvement on day two. Western delivered a strong performance on the back nine, showcasing her skill and determination. Billings impressed with a remarkable three-under on the last five holes.. Hawkes also demonstrated improvement with a three stroke advantage, contributing to the team's overall success.
Reflecting on the day's events, Head Coach Blair Garner expressed pride in the team's performance, stating, "Sydney fought hard and was just a few lip outs from having a chance to win. Ellie shot 3 under on the last 5 holes, Halle with a great back nine, and Quinn with a top ten finish. Proud of the fight we had in tough conditions."
With each player contributing to the team's success and demonstrating resilience in the face of challenges, the Knights are eager to build on their performance. They will compete at the Greenbrier Women's Collegiate Invite on April 8th in White Sulphur Springs, WV, as they continue their preparation for the USA South Conference Tournament on the 22nd. This upcoming tournament presents an opportunity for the team to fine-tune their skills and strategy, further solidifying their position as contenders in collegiate golf.
