LEXINGTON, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's wrestling team delivered an impressive showing at the Jim Crytzer Invitational, an individual tournament featuring over 200 wrestlers from 12 teams. The Knights' efforts were highlighted by a first-place finish from Tyson Hoopes, who dominated the 174-pound weight class.
Hoopes' remarkable run included three pins, a semifinal decision victory, and a win by medical forfeit in the championship bout. He scored a team-high 21 points and continues to lead the Knights with a 14-9 record this season.
The team also saw standout performances in the 184-pound division, where Ikia Garcia placed third and Hank Svedin claimed fifth. Garcia secured his podium finish with a commanding fall in the third-place match, while Svedin delivered multiple wins in the consolation rounds to earn his spot in the top five. At 197 pounds, Britton Sorenson added to the team's success with a sixth-place finish.
Notable Performances:
The Knights demonstrated depth across weight classes, with several wrestlers contributing valuable experience and points. Notably, Francisco Ramirez (133 lbs) and Richie Kulessa (141 lbs) each added to the team's score with wins in the consolation bracket.
Southern Virginia now turns its attention to the upcoming duals in West Virginia, where they will face WVU Tech and the University of Pikeville on Wednesday, January 10th, at 7:00 PM.
