Buena Vista, Va. - The Southern Virginia University men's rugby team closed out their spring 15s season with a resounding and defensive inspired victory over the visiting Eagles of Mary Washington.
The Knights got on the board early in the opening minutes with a try by
Weston Memmott, with
Zachary Jones adding the conversion. Minutes later,
Sione Tokelau crashed through several defenders to score again for the Knights, with Jones converting again. Despite a relentless Eagles attack, the Knights tenacious defense, with
Sikeli Naivalu and
Brayden Lee leading the charge, kept them at bay and out of the scoring. Tokelau would score again in similar fashion, and
Pone Aisea added one himself, with Jones's conversion closing out the scoring in the first half to give the Knights a 26 to 0 lead.
The second half was much like the first. Tokelau would score his third try of the evening to increase the Knights lead.
Jordan Masuisui would later capitalize off of a loose ball in the endzone to add another score for the Knights.
Lomu Tokelau would convert, leading to a 38-0 lead for the Knights. Masuisui would score his second late in the half. The Knights defense would continue to hold firm, leading to a final score of Knights 43, Eagles 0. This was the Knights first ever victory over the Eagles in 15s. It was also their third straight shutout of an opponent.
Inspired by their head coach Aidyn Ferris to play for a reason bigger than themselves, all the Knights who took the field played with fire and passion, showing the world once again who they truly are.
Following the match, seniors Callum Hyland,
Zachary Jones,
O'Shea Settle,
Sione Ofa,
Sione Tokelau, and
Mikaera Puriri were honored by their teammates, coaches, friends and family members, and the athletic department for their contributions to the program over the years.
The Knights will next take the field in early April at the Cherry Blossom 7s Tournament in Washington DC.
