Southern Virginia University Wins Historic Fifth Consecutive Women’s Track & Field Championship

CONCORD, N.C. - For the third year in a row, the Southern Virginia University women's track and field team converged on Concord, North Carolina for the 2026 USA South outdoor championship meet

In another dominant display of high-end talent and depth, the Knights reign supreme over the USA South for a fifth consecutive season, winning the team title in a landslide over runner-up North Carolina Wesleyan.

Day One

The team claimed two golds and seven podium finishes by the time competition concluded on Friday evening. After Bostyn Carlson captured victory in the javelin, Surraiya Mahmud-Newman established a new meet and conference record en route to winning the pole vault.

Anna Kunz and Lauren Threet took the next two spots in the pole vault to sweep the event, while Hazel Allen's second place in the javelin nearly helped the Knights sweep two events on the opening day. 

On the track, Sasha Braddy powered through the 10K to finish second as Southern Virginia took a 43 point lead into the final day of competition. 

Day Two

The final day of competition opened with sweeps in two events for the Knights. Kadance Sawyer (discus) and Bayleigh Redd-Armstrong (1500) took individual titles to lead their event groups.

Southern Virginia actually took the top five spots in the 1,500, showing off the tremendous depth of a distance core that is amongst the best in the country.

Mikki Prows won her second-ever individual conference title by winning the high jump. Marin Simons placed second as the team race was blown open to a lead of as much as 100 points.

Redd-Armstrong continued an 'Athlete of the Meet-like' day with wins in the 800 and 5K along with running mates Emma Hillam and Amee Newman who collected multiple podiums each. 

Awards

One of the most impressive days belonged to Sawyer. In addition to her discus title, Sawyer captured gold in the shot put with a personal best throw to go along with another podium finish in the hammer.

For her performance, Sawyer was named Field Rookie of the Meet and the overall Field Athlete of the Meet. Head Coach Kyle Chandler was named women's Coach of the Meet.

USA South Champions

Southern Virginia won the USA South title with a whopping 289 points, 137 ahead of the next best team. They are just the third program, considering men and women's teams, to win five consecutive championships in conference history.
