BUENA VISTA, Va. Sophomore Forward Cara Joyner scored 19-points and pulled down 9-rebounds in a losing cause for the Southern Virginia Women's Basketball team against Mary Baldwin, 68-66.  The Knights had cut down a first half deficit of 14-points down to one, before heading into the break down by four.

The first lead for the Knights came at the 9:40 mark of the second half as Joyner picked up a lose rebound to bank in a shot and send the SVU crowd into a frenzy with the Knights ahead at 48-47. The lead was not to last as the Squirrels fought back and took a lead heading into the latter minutes of the game.

Joyner was again the hub for the hosts as they fought back and took a 65-61 lead in a tense affair. Unfortunately for Southern Virginia, free-throws undid the team as they failed to convert down the stretch and a three point play with 16-seconds led the visitors to the win.

The Knights could only muster .56% free-throw percentage on 17-of-30, and paid the price with crucial misses in the ending stages of the game.

"If we take away the free throws, we played a solid game," said Head Coach Mike Harmon. "Mary Baldwin played an aggressive pressing game, and it took us a while to adjust. We need to kill games off when we get momentum, and have a lead like we did."

A hot opening first half for Jessica Anderson provided the spark for the Knights to stay in touching distance of the Squirrels. Anderson finished with 11-points and 4-steals. Ashley Baird also contributed 10-points with 4-rebunds and 2-blocks.

SVU finished shooting 39% from the field on 23-of-58 shooting. The Knights also pulled down 37-rebounds, but allowed Mary Baldwin to get 40 for the night. SVU is now 5-10 on the season. The Knights will hit the road for a game against Bridgewater Jan. 21, with a 7:00 tip-off.
