BUENA VISTA, Va.—The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team helped raise breast cancer awareness on Thursday as the Knights hosted the University of Virginia at Wise in a "Dig Pink" match to raise money for breast cancer research.
Southern Virginia (14-7) continued its strong play of late defeating UVA-Wise (9-13) in four games as the Knights moved to 5-1 in their last six matches dating back to Oct. 5, dropping only one match during that stretch to a Washington and Lee University (23-2) squad that is currently undefeated (8-0) in the NCAA Division III Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
The Knights took the first two games from UVA-Wise, and led 23-19 in Game 3 before the Cavaliers rolled off six unanswered points to force a Game 4. Southern Virginia maintained its composure, however, and closed out the match in the fourth game 25-21.
Sophomore Tori Tuttle (Kauai, Hawaii) led the Knights with 13 kills, while senior Brynn McGinn (Bedford, Ind.) and freshman Camille Tua (Lehi, Utah) both recorded 12 kills. McGinn also had 18 digs on Thursday and sophomore Shyanne Ison (Mt. Pleasant, Utah) led both teams with 20 digs.
Junior setter Nicole Gwynn (Hamilton, Mont.) continued her outstanding season recording a game-high 36 assists to go along with 12 digs and four kills.
Southern Virginia will donate all proceeds from Thursday's match to breast cancer research. Watch a replay of the Knights victory over UVA-Wise on Southern Virginia's online athletic broadcasting portal.
Volleyball has a week off before hosting NCAA Division III Eastern Mennonite University (5-16) next Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m.
