Women's Tennis Shines in Spring Opener

ROANOKE, Va. — After finishing fall play at 2-0, the Southern Virginia University women's tennis team opened its spring schedule with an impressive 6-2 victory over NCAA Division III Roanoke College on Tuesday afternoon. 

Southern Virginia (3-0) earned three valuable points from Roanoke (0-1) by sweeping the Maroons in doubles play.  

In the top-seeded doubles match, Rachel Reid and Bethany Johnson outlasted Laura Dodson and Corbin Leitch for a close-fought 9-7 win. 

Rebekah Reid and Brynn McGinn prevailed 8-5 as the Knights' second-seeded doubles team while Jennifer Jensen and Kayela Bridge took No. 3 doubles by the same score. 

Southern Virginia also took three out of five single matches as the Knights remained unbeaten for the 2010-11 season. 

Re. won 6-3, 6-2 as Southern Virginia's second seed, Johnson won decisively at No. 3, 6-0, 6-1, and Jensen defeated Roanoke's fifth-rated singles player 6-4, 6-2. 

Women's tennis hopes to keep its momentum rolling when in travels on Thursday, Mar. 3 to face Mary Baldwin College at 3:30 p.m.
