Short-handed Knights Win Close Match at Randolph-Macon, 5-4

ASHLAND, Va. — Despite missing two of its top six players, the Southern Virginia University women's tennis team pulled out a 5-4 win over Randolph-Macon College Wednesday in the Knights' closest contest of the season.

The match was part of a doubleheader with Southern Virginia men's tennis, which also defeated the Yellow Jackets (8-1).

Playing without Bethany Johnson and Jaclynn Arrington, Southern Virginia (14-3) competed in doubles play with some unfamiliar pairings, but despite the changes, the Knights were able to steal two of three doubles matches from Randolph-Macon (7-8).

Replacing Johnson in Southern Virginia's top doubles team, Jennifer Jensen paired with Rachel Reid for an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles.

Usual No. 2 doubles partners, Rebekah Reid and Brynn McGinn, rolled over Randolph-Macon's second-seeded doubles team 8-1 to give the Knights a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

Southern Virginia's top two singles players each took care of business in straight sets as Ra. Reid was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 1 singles while sister Re. Reid did not drop a game in her 6-0, 6-0 No. 2 singles win.

The Knights' No. 4, No. 5, No. 6 singles players, however, each lost their respective matches tying the score at 4-4 with only the third-seeded singles match between Southern Virginia's Jensen and Randolph-Macon's Olayemisi Ogunshina still undecided.

Playing up two singles spots, Jensen rallied back from a 4-6 loss in the opening set to take the second set 6-4. The match came down to a super tiebreaker, which Jensen won 10-5 giving Southern Virginia its fifth point and the victory.

Women's tennis, which has already set a new program record for wins this season, has two remaining matches—both doubleheaders with men's tennis.

The Knights' penultimate match of the year is tomorrow at Lynchburg College beginning at 4 p.m.
