Knights Get First Win Over Lynchburg, 5-4

LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's tennis team defeated Lynchburg College for the first time in program history Thursday winning a close-fought match on the Hornet's home court 5-4.

The match was part of a doubleheader with Southern Virginia women's tennis, which also defeated Lynchburg 7-2.

Southern Virginia (11-5) took two of three doubles matches from Lynchburg (4-10) and then split six singles-play matches to reach the final score.

Shaolin Chandam and Stefan Vlassek teamed for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles while Adam Williford and Brennan Alford took the third-seeded doubles match by the same score.

Chandam collected his fourth straight singles win with a 6-1, 6-2 straight-set victory at No. 1 singles.

Williford (No. 5) and Alford (No. 6) also won in singles play and finished the afternoon at 2-0.

Along with setting a new single-season record for wins (11) this season, the Knights have defeated three rival schools—Ferrum, Lynchburg and Shenandoah—for the first time in program history.

Men's tennis will close out its year on Tuesday, Apr. 19 at Bluefield College. The match, which will be the Knights' third straight doubleheader with Southern Virginia women's tennis, will begin at 2:30 p.m.
