Men's Tennis Defeats Emory and Henry for First Time

By Lancaster Brown

EMORY, Va.—Southern Virginia University men's tennis team won its second straight road match by defeating Emory and Henry College, 7-2, Wednesday afternoon in Emory, Va.

With the victory, the Knights improve to 2-1 in dual matches for the year while Emory and Henry drops to 1-2.

"This was a great win for us, especially since we've never beaten Emory and Henry before," said Southern Virginia head coach Tony Caputo. "Emory and Henry is a tough team who has four returners back this year from last year's squad, but our young team played very well against them."

A strong showing in doubles action where they won all three matches gave the Knights momentum heading into singles play, which Southern Virginia claimed four of six matches.

Pradeep Ravisankar defeated Kamil Aliev, 7-6, (7-0), 7-5 in singles and teamed up with Dallin Evans to win their doubles match, 8-3, over John Ferguson and Luke Funkhouser of Emory and Henry.  Evans also recorded a victory in his singles match, beating Ferguson 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

Cooper Brown and Zac Bowers earned another doubles win by defeating Kamil Aliev and Webster Gilley, 8-5, in the No. 2 doubles match.  Bowers went on to win in singles play, topping the Wasps' Luke Funkhouser 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.

Brian Blocher and Brennan Alford finished doubles play winning their match, 8-4, over Emory and Henry's John Hanlon and Jonathan Romano.  Blocher then defeated Romano 6-1, 6-1 in singles action.

Men's tennis will next head to Lynchburg, Va. on Thursday, Oct. 10, to take on Randolph College.
