Women's Tennis Opens Spring with 9-0 Win at Mary Baldwin

Written by Chris Pendleton

STAUNTON, Va.—The Southern Virginia University women's tennis team opened its spring schedule on Tuesday with a 9-0 shutout win over Mary Baldwin College.

"It was a great way to start the spring season for our young team," said fifth-year Head Coach Deidra Dryden. "We opened the match with strong doubles play and carried that momentum into our singles matches."

Southern Virginia (2-2) won all three doubles matches at Mary Baldwin (0-5) on Tuesday, before sweeping through singles play against the Fighting Squirrels.

The Knights won five of their six singles matches in straight sets, including a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win from Ivy Kuroki (Hershey, Neb.) in the top-seeded singles match as Southern Virginia's senior captain climbed to 2-2 on the season.

Amy Spencer (Orem, Utah) was the only Knight to earn a split-set win at Mary Baldwin as the freshman rebounded from a 4-6 loss in her opening set to take the second set 6-4, before winning the deciding tiebreaker 11-9.

"That was a great start to Amy's Southern Virginia career," Dryden said. "She showed a ton of mental toughness by bouncing back and winning the No. 2 singles match after dropping her first set. She has the potential to be a great player."

Women's tennis has one day off before traveling to Randolph College on Thursday, Mar. 14 for a 3:30 p.m. match at Randolph College.
