Women's Tennis Drops Season Finale 6-3 at Bluefield

Written by Lancaster Brown

BLUEFIELD, Va.—The Southern Virginia University women's tennis team finished its season on Thursday, dropping a 6-3 match at Bluefield College.

"Today was a tough loss, but I am excited by the singles performances of Ann [Kuroki] and Kirsten [Laurence]. I look forward to their future success in the tennis program," said fifth-year Head Coach Deidra Dryden. "I look forward to continuing to develop those that will return next year, and to prepare to enter the CAC."

Despite giving Bluefield (2-10) default points at the No. 6-singles and No. 3-doubles slots, Southern Virginia's (3-11) junior Ann Kuroki (Hershey, Neb.) came away with wins in singles and doubles competition while freshman Kirsten Laurence (Bountiful, Utah) earned the advantage at the No. 2-seed for the Knights as well.

A. Kuroki and Amy Spencer (Orem, Utah) teamed up for the 8-6 victory at the No. 1 doubles position, defeating Bluefield's Casey Germain and Erika Cregger. A. Kuroki then went on to shutout Cregger 6-0, 6-0 in singles play as the No. 3-seed.

Laurence swept both sets (6-4, 6-3) in the win over the Rams' No. 2-seed Leslie Williams.

Women's tennis ended the 2012-13 season on a nine-match losing streak, but will look toward preparing to competing next year in the Capital Athletic Conference.
