FREDERICKSBURG, Va.—The Southern Virginia University men's soccer team suffered a 4-0 loss to fellow Capital Athletic Conference foe University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia Wednesday afternoon.
Offensively, the Knights had six shot attempts. Junior forward Erik Gutierrez had four shots and the only shot on goal on the afternoon for Southern Virginia. Colby Briggs and Jared Attridge pitched in one shot each.
Freshman Ben Cisse started the scoring spree for the Eagles 22 seconds into the first half. Riley Fisher, assisted by Carlos Mendoza, gave the Eagles a 2-0 advantage.
Conor Nogueira's corner kick allowed Mike Bennett and Jacob Burke to team up for a header into the net for a 3-0 lead. Seconds later, Conor Nogueira set up Carlos Mendoza for another header and a 4-0 score to end the half.
The Knights picked it up on defense as they held the Eagles to fewer shots on goal in the second half. Keeper Efren Gutierrez ended the night with six saves in the loss, bringing his save total to 96 (was 90) in 11 games. Keepers Tyler Back and Matt Spencer split time for Mary Washington. Spencer picked up one save while Back picked up the win.
The Knights will host CAC opponent York College of Pennsylvania Saturday at The Fields. Game time is set for 3:30 pm.
