Box Score BUENA VISTA, Va.—Despite Erik Gutierrez's second-half goal, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team lost by a 7-1 score to Capital Athletic Conference foe York College Saturday afternoon at The Fields in Buena Vista, Virginia.
Offensively, the Knights were outshot 30-9 with four shots on goal. Junior forward Erik Gutierrez led with four shots and the only Southern Virginia goal on the afternoon. Josh Smith added two shots on goal and Jared Attridge pitched in one shot.
Sophomore Matt Freibaum started off the scoring spree for the Spartans in the third minute of the game before Brendan Saberton, Justin Kaiser, Christopher Saberton and Yawo Baah gave the Spartans a 5-0 lead to end the half.
Gutierrez, assisted by Carlos Munoz, netted the only goal for a 5-1 game midway through the second half. York College continued the offensive pressure as Peter Lundgaard and Joel Teston each had one goal in the final three minutes for a final 7-1 score.
Freshman keeper Colin Flynn ended the night with 12 saves in the loss. Keepers Brad Schmidt, Daniel Erk and Charlie Johnson split time in the box for the Spartans. Johnson picked up two saves in 45 minutes and the win.
The Knights will travel to CAC opponent Marymount University Thursday at Long Bridge Park in Arlington, Virginia. Game time is set for 7 pm.
