BUENA VISTA, Va.— The Southern Virginia University women's tennis team defeated Mary Baldwin College in its home opener, 8-1, Tuesday afternoon at the Tennis Courts in Buena Vista, Va.
The Knights swept the competition in singles play. As No. 1 singles Elizabeth Fuchs defeated Alexandra Cincinnati of Mary Baldwin 6-2 and 7-6. No. 2 Lindee Christensen toppled Jochebed Komson 6-2 and 6-2. Rachel Christensen and Micah Roberts each conquered Mary Baldwin opponents, Miangel Hite and Jeni-Lee MacLaughlin by 6-0, 6-0 scores. As No. 5 Kari Stollenwerk picked up another point for the Knights by a 6-3, 6-3 score. Senior Ann Kuroki sealed the singles sweep for the Knights with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) defeat over Brenda Ajavon of Mary Baldwin.
In doubles action, freshman Elixabeth Fuchs and Lindee Christensen teamed up to overcome Alexandra Cincinnati and Alayah Austin by an 8-5 score. Rachel Christensen and Micah Roberts easily defeated Miangel Hite and Jeni-Lee MacLaughlin by an 8-0 score. Mary Baldwin's single point would come from Ashley Adamson and Heidi Lee falling, 8-0, to Sakurako Ishii and Jochebed Koomson.
The Knights will continue non-league play as they head to Shenandoah University Wednesday March 18. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at The Lowery Tennis Courts in Winchester, Va.
