BUENA VISTA, Va.—Despite a solid effort by the Southern University women's tennis team it fell in a close match to Randolph College, by a 5-4 score, Wednesday afternoon in Lynchburg, Virginia.
The Knights were two of three in doubles competition to gain an early advantage on the WildCats. Lindee Christensen and Elizabeth Fuchs fell by an 8-2 score. Rachel Christensen and Micah Roberts teamed up to defeat Srar Parker and Heather Parra of Randolph by an 8-6 score. Kari Stollenwerk and Ann Kuroki picked up a team point by an 8-4 score over Danielle Lewis and Tiandre Forde.
In singles play, Randoph's Dina Velazco defeated Southern Virginia's Lindee Christensen by a 6-0, 6-0 score to even the team scores 2-2. Sarah Parker of topped Elizabeth Fuchs by a 6-4, 6-1 score for the WildCat advantage. Jenna Sweet overcame Rachel Christensen by a 6-1, 6-4 count to extend the WildCat lead by 4-2.
Ann Kuroki picked up a Knight point as she defeated Danielle Lewis of Randolph by a 6-3 7-5 score. Kari Stollenwerk tied up the match as she battled with Tiandre Forde for a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) victory. Micah Roberts contended well with Randolph's Heather Parra in the No. 4 singles spot but came up short and fell by a 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-3) score.
The Knights will hit the road on Saturday to take on Salisbury University in its third conference match of the season. The match is slated to begin at 4 p.m. at The Tennis Center of Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
