BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's tennis team dominated the Roanoke Maroons 8-1, after sweeping the doubles and winning five of the six singles matches.
In No.1 singles, TJ Snelson fended off a late effort of his opponent in the first set, and finished him off with a score of 7-6 (7-2) 6-2. Tanner Bassett regrouped after his opponent rallied in the second set to win 6-0 1-6 6-3 in the number two spot.
Tyler Clark faced very few challenges during his No. 3 singles match, and dominated his opponent 6-1 6-3. Zac Bowers found a rhythm after some initial nerves, and won 6-2 6-2 in the fourth spot. At No. 5 Jake Fisher battled his way back and win the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-1). He then imposed his game for a 6-0 win in the second set.
Colin Bigelow, the newest member of the team, fell after fending off his opponent for most of the first set.
The Knights are ready for their second week of action and are looking to build upon their opening successes. Their next match will be against West Virginia State next Tuesday at 3 p.m. at The Fields.
