BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's tennis team came through with a big 5-4 win over Lynchburg College Thursday, to continue their four-match win streak.
Both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams worked hard to secure early wins for the Knights, winning 8-3, and 8-2 respectively. The No. 3 doubles team made up of Tyler Clark and Colin Bigelow fought off the Hornets (0-5) most of the set, before eventually falling 8-6.
With a 2-1 lead, the Knights knew they needed to continue playing their game. No. 2 and the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Week Tanner Basset quickly beat his opponent 6-0 6-2 to put the Knights up 3-1 in the match. No. 1 TJ Snelson started off strong against his opponent, beating him back with his heavy forehand to win the first set, however, his opponent recovered and edged a win 1-6 6-1 6-0. In the No. 3 spot, Tyler Clark found himself in a hole after losing the first set 4-6 but rallied to win the following sets 6-1 6-4.
Np. 4 Zac Bowers faced off against his opponent. He quickly won the first set 6-0. He then rallied in the second set from 2-3 down to win the next four games, clinching the match for the Knights.
Both No. 5 Jake Fisher and No. 6 Collin Bigelow looked to add upon the Knight's win. Fisher fell in a hard-fought deciding tiebreaker; the match's score was 7-5 0-6 0-1 (9-11). Colin Bigelow was also beaten by a score of 6-0 6-0.
The Knights hope to continue their momentum in their next match against CAC opponent Penn State Harrisburg on March 18 at 11 a.m. in Middletown, Pa.
