Women's Tennis Edges Hornets

By Zac Bowers

BUENA VISTA, Va. – In their first match of the spring season, the Southern Virginia University women's tennis team was able to pull out a close 5-4 victory Lynchburg College.

The Knights were able to take two of the three doubles points. At No. 2 doubles, Rachel Christensen and Audrey McBride cruised to an 8-1 victory while No. 3 Lauren Morrison and Natalie Teets found their rhythm to win 8-3.

In singles, the Knights faced much stiffer competition. No. 1 Elizabeth Fuchs struggled against her opponent's ground game and was defeated 6-0 6-1. No. 2 Rachel Christensen kept her opponent off balance the whole match and won 6-0 6-1.

Makaela Adamson, the Knights No. 3 singles player, was next off the court. Adams and her opponent ground it out from the baseline but Adamson's opponent was able to defeat the sophomore 6-1 6-2.

With the match tied at three points, the Knights needed to dig deep. Despite having missed the fall season due to injury, No. 5 Lauren Morrison was determined to win her maiden match this season. Fighting through the lingering pain of her injury, Morrison defeated her opponent 6-1 6-2.

Natalie Teets won the final point for the Knights, coming back after losing the first set 4-6 to defeat her opponent 6-3 6-4 in the remaining sets.

The Knights will be back in action on March 6 to take on Hollins University at 3:00 p.m. at The Fields.
