BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University women's tennis team battled Meredith College on Friday, defeating the Avenging Angels 7-2.
The Knights' doubles teams all went up a break in their doubles matches and never looked back, defeating their opponents 8-3, 8-4, 8-4 at the No. 1, 2, and 3 positions respectively.
Both No. 1 Rachel Christensen and No. 2 Elizabeth Fuchs had to fight back tenacious opponents.
Christensen edged her opponent in the first set 7-5 but was broken in the second and dropped the set 6-3. She quickly turned the momentum and stormed past her opponent in the tiebreaker 10-1.
Fuchs dominated the first set with a 6-1 win, but her resurgent opponent began grinding through the rallies and found a hole to take the second set from Fuchs 6-4. Halfway through the third set tiebreaker, Fuchs began asserting herself in the rallies and pulled away for a 10-6 victory.
The Knights only dropped points in the No. 3 and No. 6 singles positions and were able to power past the Angels 7-2.
On Tuesday, March 20, the Knights will hit the road to take on Averett University at 2:30 p.m.
