BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's tennis team found key victories in both singles and doubles to defeat Hampden-Sydney College 5-4.
T.J. Snelson and Zachary Bowers, the No. 3 doubles team were the first to find a point against the Tigers, defeating them 8-3. Ben Spencer and Paul Monson were off soon after, defeating their opponents 8-3 as well. No. 1 doubles Tanner O'Brien and Andrew Blonquist were defeated despite a resurgence in the second set.
In singles, No. 2 Tanner O'Brien dismantled his opponent 6-0, 6-3 to give the Knights the first singles point of the day. No. 3 Paul Monson defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-0 to put the Knights up 4-1 in the match. No. 1 Ben Spencer fell just one break short each set of his match, falling 6-4, 6-4.
No. 5 T.J. Snelson battled both his opponent and sickness but was able to pull out a straight sets victory over his opponent 6-4, 6-1.
Playing at No. 6 Zac Bowers split sets with his opponent and battled back after a 5-1 deficit in the third but ultimately could not break his opponent and lost 6-4 in the third.
Andrew Blonquist, the Knights No. 4 singles player, was last off the court. After an extremely tight first set, Blonquist battled back in the final set but fell 7-6, 6-4.
The Knights will have the week to prepare before taking on Capital Athletic Conference opponents Salisbury University and Penn State Harrisburg on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
