DANVILLE, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's tennis team suffered its second loss of the season, falling to Averett University in a close 5-4 match.
In doubles, it was Paul Monson and Ben Spencer who showed their prowess and grit. After going down 5-7, the No. 2 doubles team stonewalled their opponents' attempts to close out the match and won the next four games for a 9-7 win.
Both Monson and Spencer shined in singles as well. No. 1 Monson found took advantage of the openings he saw in each set to defeat his opponent 6-4, 6-4. Spencer, the Knights' No. 2 singles player, battled back after losing the first set to take the match 4-6, 6-2, and 10-7 in the third set tiebreaker.
No. 4 Tanner O'Brien owned the net in his singles match, quickly defeating his opponent 6-2, 6-3.
The Knights will play at home on Wednesday, April 4 as they take on Capital Athletic Conference opponent Mary Washington at 4:00 p.m.
