Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team suffered a tough loss 59-63 Friday night against Shenandoah University, despite Katie Garrish's shining effort.
The Hornets snag their first win of the season while Southern Virginia drops its first loss.
The game started tight, with both teams exchanges points throughout the quarter. Courtney McKrola added three late points for the Knights with hopes of winning the first quarter. Shenandoah's Sierra St. Cyr tallied a late three-pointer to take both teams into the second quarter tied.
The second quarter took the shape of the first with both teams swapping leads. Garrish lead the quarter with six points, followed by Anna Singer's four. The Hornets went into the second half with a 29-26 lead.
Sophie Wright was the highlight of the third quarter with her hot hand and her three 3-pointers. The Knights would tighten up the score only being down by four going into the final quarter of play.
Southern Virginia did everything they could to cut into the deficit and take the lead, but Shenandoah kept their distance. Garrish took matters into her own hands with eight points in the final quarter, and Sophie Wright added one more 3-pointer to the game before the clock hit zero.
Amanda Wood lead the Knights with five assists, while Wright ended with an impressive 14 points. Garrish would sweep the rest of the stats leading the team in blocks (4), rebounds (10), steals (5), and points (25).
Southern Virginia will host Pfeiffer in Knight Arena on Tuesday, November 19. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
