Strong Second Quarter Propels Women's Basketball Over Generals with 69-63 Victory

BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team made history Monday night, defeating Washington and Lee University for the first time in the program's Division III history` by a score of 69-63. 

Cory Stout led the way for the Knights (8-2), scoring a team-high 14 points followed by a game-high five assists. Savanna Christensen closely followed with 13 points and a double-double on the night while Katie Garrish dominated in rebounds with 12 and ten points in a double-double effort. Amanda Wood and Courtney McKrola led the bench with nine and seven points. Taylor Casey for the Generals (4-5) had an impressive game-high 23 points to lead all players.

Beginning the game, the Knights found themselves down 22-16 in the first ten minutes of the game after a Generals ended the period on a 9-2 run. Southern Virginia recollected themselves, dominating defensively, only allowing Washington and Lee to score just six points in the second ten quarter while pouring in 18 of their own claiming the lead at the half 34-28. Wood energized the Knights, scoring seven crucial points off the bench to bring life back into the Knights.

Southern Virginia outshot the Generals from the field 45.6 percent (15-for-33) to 44 percent (10-for-31) and capitalized off winning the rebounding battle 23-15 in the opening half. 

Washington and Lee began to chip away at their deficit in the second half, making it a single possesion game in the opening minute of the third quarter. The Knights then managed a five-point lead for a majority of the quarter before the Generals trailed by one with 3:59 left. Southern Virginia went on a 12-5 run to hold off W&L to maintain the lead at the quarter break, 53-45. In the final quarter of play, the Generals made one more final attempt to complete the comeback bringing the game to within one, 61-60, but Southern Virginia's resiliency paid off outscoring the the Generals 8-3 in the final three minutes, securing the 69-63 victory. 

The Knights outshot the Generals 37.1 percent (26-for-70) from the field while Washington and Lee held the upperhand from deep 47.1 percent (8-for-17) to the Southern Virginia's 30 percent (6-for-20). Southern Virginia dominated the paint outscoring the Generals 32-16 while edging the Generals in the rebound game 45-44 with the Knights collecting 17 offensive rebounds. The Southern Virginia  bench shined outscoring Washington and Lee's bench 22-5. 

The Knights will look to build on their current success, taking on Mary Baldwin on Dec. 30. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
