STAUNTON, Va. — The Southern Virginia women's basketball team wrapped up 2019 with a win against Mary Baldwin University by a score of 60-50. 

Katie Garrish made Southern Virginia University history, becoming the first player to surpass 1,000 points since joining the DIII era. Garrish ended her historical game with a game-high 29 points and 18 rebounds. Coming off the bench, Savanna Christensen scored 14 points and nine rebounds, while Cory Stout dished out a game-high six assists. 

Southern Virginia trailed Mary Baldwin (5-5) at the end of the first after having their worst quarter of the season, scoring only seven points. Mary Baldwin used the play of Demet Saygili and her 11 points to keep their lead throughout the half. 

At the break, the Squirrels led the Knights (9-2) 24-19 and outshot Southern Virginia 21.21 percent (7-for-33)  to 26.7 percent (8-for-30) from the field. Garrish led the team at the half with five points and 11 boards 

With 1:34 remaining in the third quarter, the Knights tied the game for the first time at 37 apiece, and with :53 remaining in the third, Southern Virginia grabbed their first lead of the game 39-37 off a Garrish layup. The Knights carried their scoring momentum in the fourth quarter outscoring Mary Baldwin 21-11 in the fourth and 41-26 in the half. Southern Virginia ended the half outshooting the Squirrels 52.9 percent (18-for-34) to 19.23 percent (5-for-26) from the field. 

The Knights' bench came up big in the game, outscoring Mary Baldwin's bench 24-9. Southern Virginia dominated at the board, outrebounding the Squirrels 49-39, 13 of which were offensive rebounds. The Knights ended the game outshooting Mary Baldwin 37.3 percent (25-for-67) to 23.2 (13-for-56) percent from the field. 

Southern Virginia will begin the New Year awaiting Averett on Jan. 2. Tip-off is to be announced.
