Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team fell to Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe Christopher Newport University 66-50 Wednesday night.
Katie Garrish awed those watching with her performance for the Knights (13-3, 1-1 CAC) debuting Division III's first point-rebound-block triple-double of the season along with being the first of her career. Savanna Christensen led all players with 14 points on the night along with four boards. Angel Tuisavura recorded her first double-double of her career with ten points and ten boards on the night. Anna Singer led the bench with five points and three rebounds. Natalie Terwilliger led the way for Christopher Newport University with 12 points on the night.
The Captains (13-4, 2-0 CAC) showed dominance early in the game, rattling off 25 points in the first quarter of play led by Sondra Fan's nine points. CNU's defense stood tall, holding the talented Knights' offense to only 6 points.
Southern Virginia University flipped a switch in the second quarter showing their shooting talent going on an 8-0 run to begin the second quarter to bring the score within 11 points 14-25 with 6:22 remaining in the half. The Knights outshot the Captains 42.9 percent (6-for-14) to 25 percent (3-for-12) from the field and 33.3 percent (1-for-3) to 12.5 percent (1-for-8) from the three.
At the break, Christopher Newport University had a commanding 36-21 lead. The Captains outshot the Knights 34.4 percent (11-for-32) to 33.3 percent (9-for-27) from the field and 26.7 percent (4-for-15) 25 percent (1-for-4) from the three. Southern Virginia University outrebounded Christopher Newport University 21-15, collecting six offensive rebounds.
Both teams exchanged points to begin the second half before the Captains used a 13-2 run to obtain their largest lead of the game at 23 points 31-54 with 2:09 remaining in the third. CNU outscored the Knights 18-10 in the third.
Southern Virginia University showed hope of a comeback scoring the first six points of the fourth quarter initiated by two Tuisavura layups to bring the score to 37-54. With 3:05 remaining in the game, the Knights made their last effort at a comeback. Garrish made a layup that ignited a flurry of points, and Southern Virginia went on a 9-2 run to finish the game, but time was not in favor of the Knights dropping their first CAC contest of the season.
Southern Virginia University outshot Christopher Newport University 38.6 percent (22-for-57) to 34.4 percent (22-for-64) from the field and won the rebound battle 42-37. The Knights dominated in the paint once again, outscoring the Captains 36-28. Christopher Newport University took advantage of Southern Virginia University's turnovers outscoring the Knights 33-14 off turnovers.
The Knights continue CAC competition welcoming the Spartans of York College to Knight Arena on Saturday, Jan. 18. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
