Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Oh. — The No. 7 Southern Virginia University men's volleyball team wrapped up play at the 2020 Jim Coleman Invitational with a sweep over Wittenburg 25-17, 25-14, 25-19.
Nahuel Recabarren shined in the victory with a game-high 16 kills and a .520 hitting average. Recabarren added six digs to his game resume. Mark Stapley had a game-high nine digs, and Kaipo Tagaloa dished out 26 assists.
In the first set of the match, the Knights (2-1) jumped out to an early 5-1 lead. Midway through the set, Southern Virginia University built its largest lead of the set at seven points 20-13 led by kills from Recabarren and Jeremy Brown. The Knights utilized Wittenberg's (2-2) eight consecutive errors at the end of the set to take the early 1-0 lead 25-16.
The second set saw Southern Virginia University build an early 10-5 lead off kills from Curtis Stone and Stapley. The Knights used an 8-3 run to build an 18-8 lead, and after a 3-0 run by the Tigers late in the set, Wittenberg had a costly service error that gave Southern Virginia University the 2-0 lead.
Wittenberg started the third set with 5-3 lead, but the Knights did not let them get comfortable. Southern Virginia University used a 7-3 run to take the lead 10-8. The Knights used a final 4-1 run with kills from Stone and Recabarren to complete the sweep over the Tigers. Tagaloa concluded his tournament play being named to the All-Tournament team.
Southern Virginia University continues its season next weekend at the Juniata Invitational with the first game beginning on Friday, Jan. 24, at 5 p.m.
