Box Score COLUMBUS, Oh. — The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team wrapped up their double-header weekend with a win over Capital 15-11.
Offensively for the Knights (2-1), Chandler Wescott locked in four points to lead all players in the form of three goals and one assist. Zach Danneman and Carter Bean each contributed three points apiece with Danneman recording the hat trick and Bean with two goals and one assist.
On the defensive side, Dalon Hampshire recorded 13 saves to give him his third consecutive game with double-digit saves. Seth Millington recorded a team-high three caused turnovers while senior Shawn Lamb tallied eight ground balls.
Wescott put momentum in the Knights favor after putting the team on the board first after he got free from his defender to score an unassisted goal to put the Knights up 1-0. After a Capital (0-1) goal from Cj Hughes, Bean scored his first goal of the night unassisted to give the lead back to Southern Virginia 2-1. Another Crusaders goal tied the game at 2-2 before the Knights doubled up Capital 4-2 off unassisted goals from Isaac DeGarlais and a man-up goal from Lamb with 2:43 remaining in the first quarter. Jack Scharner cut the deficit to one point 4-3 after scoring an unassisted goal to finish the first quarter of play.
Again, Wescott opened the quarter with the first goal after getting open for defender Jacob Lamb to assist him for his second goal of the game to bring the lead to 5-3 with 13:36 remaining in the half. Capital used a 3-0 run to give the team its first lead of the game 6-5 with 11:44 on the clock. Southern Virginia answered with a run of their own in the form of four consecutive goals led by two Danneman goals to give the team the 9-6 lead with three minutes remaining until halftime. Cj Hughes scored his second goal of the game after getting a shot past Southern Virginia goalkeeper Hampshire to bring the score to 9-7 before heading into halftime.
At the break, both teams went 9-for-18 on the faceoffs while both teams recorded 17 groundballs. Wescott led all players with a first-half hat trick while Danneman added two goals of his own.
Capital began the second half executing their man-up play to bring the team within one point 9-8. The Knights defense held off the Crusader offense the remainder of the quarter while Danneman and Lamb each scored a goal to extend their lead to three points 11-8 heading into the final quarter of play.
Southern Virginia picked up where they left off scoring the first three goals of the fourth quarter kickstarted by a Ty Veres unassisted goal to bring their lead to 14-8 with 7:54 remaining in the game. Capital scored their first goal in over 20 minutes of play to cut its' deficit to five points 14-9 with 4:30 on the clock. Veres added his second goal of the game thirty seconds later and the Crusaders scored two extra-man goals to wrap up gameplay with Southern Virginia locking in the 15-11 win.
Southern Virginia ended the game recording 32 ground balls while going 13-for-30 at the faceoff x. The Knights held the advantage outshooting the Crusaders 55-43 and going 1-2 on the man-up unit while executing its clearing strategy going 15-for-17 on the clear.
The Knights return home to Knight Stadium to host the Quakers of Guilford College on Saturday, Feb. 22. The opening face-off is set for 1 p.m.
