Box Score ASHLAND, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's volleyball team earned its fourth consecutive sweep with a victory over Randolph-Macon 25-19, 25-15, 25-23.
Mark Stapley impressed on the night with eight kills on 12 total attempts while hitting .500 on the night with two service aces. Nahuel Reccabarren followed Stapley with a .400 hitting average collecting 11 kills on 20 attempts. The duo combined for 10 of the team's combined 33 digs. Kaipo Tagaloa dished out a game-high 26 assists while Tyler McCreadie dominated at the net with three blocks.
Kolby Gibson and Scotty Carter of Randolph-Macon each recorded team-highs with five kills while adding four total service aces.
After an early 2-0 start to the first set, Randolph-Macon (3-11, 1-3 CVC) went up 3-2 before Southern Virginia (5-3, 2-0 CVC) regained the lead 4-3 with an error from the Hornets and a kill from Tagaloa. Both teams exchanged points reaching a 10-10 stalemate before the Knights began to pull away with an 11-4 run initiated by a Recabarren kill to bring the score to 21-14. Southern Virginia matched Randolph-Macon's five points the remainder of the set to take the early 1-0 lead in the match. The Knights ended the opening set hitting .440 accounting for 16 kills.
The Knights found themselves down 5-3 early in the second set before a kill from Recabarren kickstarted a 12-3 run to make the score 15-8. Following a 3-0 by the Hornets to cut their deficit to four points 15-11, Southern Virginia answered with a 10-4 run led by McCreadie's two kills to take the second set 25-15 and the 2-0 lead in the match. Southern Virginia outhit the Yellow Jackets in the second set .273 to -.080.
The momentum for the Knights continued into the final set establishing an early 9-3 lead with five different players earning kills. After a 5-2 run by Southern Virginia to make the new score 14-5, the Hornets brought themselves within one point 18-17 after a 12-4 run. After a service error from Randolph-Macon, the Jornets used two points to tie the game for the first time 19-19 following a James Manning kill. The Knights managed to hold off the Hornet's run out scoring Randolph-Macon the remainder of the set 6-4 led by three Recabarren kills to complete the sweep. Despite its least productive set on offense, the Knights completed the sweep still outhitting Randolph-Macon .185 to .069.
Southern Virginia will continue its season looking for their fifth consecutive sweep against Penn State -Behrend on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Messiah College. The match is set for 3 p.m.
