Box Score

BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team earned their third win of the season, defeating Guilford College 26-16 Saturday afternoon.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Knights (3-1) set a program record, beating last year's record of 25 goals against Carthage on March 16, scoring 26 goals led by Zach Danneman's six goals and two assists. Chandler Wescott added eight points of his own in the form of four goals and four assists, while Tennison Schmidt added seven points with a hat trick and four assists. Carter Bean, Shawn Lamb, and Ty Veres added hat tricks of their own while Bean had three assists, and Veres had two.

Defensively for Southern Virginia, Jacob Lamb, Seth Millington, and Blake Jackson, all tied for the game-high record of two caused turnovers. Dalon Hampshire recorded 12 assists while Caleb Brodie played 17 minutes and collected four impressive saves.

The Knights found themselves down 4-1 early in the first quarter before an Isaac DeGarlais goal sparked a 4-0 scoring run, which included a Danneman first-quarter hat trick, to put Southern Virginia up 5-4 with 2:48 in the first. One minute later, Nick Honkomp of Guilford (3-1) tied the score at 5-5 with 2:01 left, and two more Quaker goals put the new score at 7-5 to give Guilford the lead heading into the second quarter.

Both teams traded goals at the beginning of the quarter with goals coming from Veres and a man-up goal from Schmidt to make the new score 9-7 with 9:34 on the clock. Another goal from the Quakers extended their lead to three goals 10-7 before a Bean unassisted goal, and a man-up goal from Lamb brought the team within one 10-9 with 2:27 left in the half. Following an unnecessary roughness penalty on the Knights, the Quakers capitalized on the extra man opportunity to sneak in a goal to go into the halftime intermission with the 11-9 lead.

At the break, Guilford held the ground ball advantage over the Knights 16-15 while also controlling the x going 12-for-19 on faceoffs. The Quakers outshot the Knights 24-18 in the first half while Southern Virginia scored on four of five man-up opportunities.

After winning the opening faceoff of the second half, Bean created space from his defender scoring unassisted to bring the Knights within one goal 11-10 with 14:33 on the clock. Three minutes later, long stick midfielder Blake Jackson tied the game at 11 with 11:38 remaining in the quarter after taking the ball across midfield on a successful clear. Danneman then scored unassisted giving Southern Virginia its first lead 12-11 of the game since the 2:58 mark in the first quarter.

After exchanging goals, Connor Sweeney of Guilford tied the game again 13-13 of an assist from Dimaggio Wilson. The Knights used another 3-0 scoring run with all three goals coming from Wescott to put Southern Virginia up 16-13 with 3:50 remaining in the third. The Quakers cut their deficit to two 16-14 off a goal from Bryce Craig before heading into the fourth quarter.

Each team traded goals at the beginning of the fourth before Derek Zacatenco of Guilford scored a man-down goal to bring Quakers within one 17-16 with 11:15 left in the game. Southern Virginia closed the game on a 9-0 scoring run led by two Danneman and Lamb goals to lock in the 26-16 victory. The Knights defense showed their dominance, only allowing five total second-half goals.

Southern Virginia ended the game holding the advantage on faceoffs going 22-for-43 at the x while outshooting Guilford 61-38. The Knights' extra-man unit impressed going .70 percent (7-for-10) while winning the ground ball war 35-30.

The Knights continue their season on the road taking on Wilkes on Saturday, Feb. 29. The opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
