BUENA VISTA, Va.— The Southern Virginia University women's tennis team defeated Randolph College 7-2 on Friday afternoon in their first match of the spring season. With the win, the Knights improve to 4-1 overall for the year.
Southern Virginia came out strong in doubles, taking two of three points. Elizabeth Fuchs and Mercedes Matley got it started, taking down their opponents 8-2. Audrey McBride and Natalie Tetterton were next off, earning an 8-3 win. Despite a solid effort, the top team of Alyssa Sewell and Morgan Blount were ousted by Randolph (1-2), 8-4.
Heading into singles, Annie Aldrich and Natalie Tetterton kept the momentum going, winning 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-4 respectively. Falling at the No. 1 spot, the Knights were up 4-2 and needed one more win to clinch the match.
Audrey McBride quickly answered the call, defeating her opponent 6-3, 6-2, earning the Knights the team victory. Of the two matches left on the court, Lauren Skouson finished first with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 4 spot, and Alyssa Sewell closed out the match with a tough third set win 5-7, 6-2, 10-8.
Southern Virginia continues action on the 7th of February as they will hit the road to take on New York University with match time scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
