Men's Lacrosse Takes Down Wilkes 18-9

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. — The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team won its third consecutive game after defeating Wilkes University Saturday afternoon 18-9. 

Offensively for the Knights (4-1), Ty Veres scored a career-high five goals while adding an assist on the afternoon. Tennison Schmidt and Zach Danneman each added four goals and combined for three assists while Chandler Wescott contributed a hat trick to the victory. 

On the defensive side of the ball, Dalon Hampshire recorded ten saves on 17 shots. Seth Millington anchored the defense with three caused turnovers and four ground balls while senior Jacob Lamb added two caused turnovers and two ground balls. 

Danneman places Southern Virginia on the scoreboard 26 seconds into the game after getting free his defender to score an unassisted goal. One minute later, Danneman again scored off a Shawn Lamb assist, putting the Knights up 2-0. Wescott added his first of the game scoring an unassisted goal before Ethan Weaver of Wilkes (1-1) scored the team's first goal of the game off a John Luna assist, making the new score 3-1. Schmidt finished the first quarter off, scoring an unassisted goal to head into the second quarter with a 5-1 lead. 

Following a pushing penalty on the Colonels, the Knight capitalized on the extra man opportunity to score the man-up goal, which initiated a 6-0 run by Southern Virginia led by Veres' three goals, making the new score 11-1. Wilkes added two more goals in the final minutes of the half before Shawn Lamb scored with one second on the clock off an Isaac DeGarlais assist to head into the intermission with the 12-3 advantage. 

At the break, the Knights dominated on groundballs taking the 24-15 advantage over the Colonels. Southern Virginia outshot Wilkes 35-16 while going 11-for-15 on faceoffs. Veres led all players with four first-half goals. 

Schmidt kept the momentum going for the Knights beginning the third quarter with an unassisted goal while Ethan Weaver added his second goal of the game one minute later, making the new score 13-4. Wescott and Danneman added one goal each to extend the team's lead to 11 goals 15-4 before Jack O'Connell of Wilkes, and DeGarlais added goals for each team to go into the final quarter of play with Southern Virginia holding on to the 16-5 lead. 

The Colonels had their best quarter of play in the fourth outscoring the Knights 4-2. John Luna of Wilkes scored his first goal of the game before Veres tallied his fifth goal of the game off an unassisted goal making the score 17-7 with 7:49 remaining in the game. The Colonels closed out the game with a 3-1 run, but could not come back as time expired and Southern Virginia walked away with the 18-9 victory. 

The Knights ended the game with the 49-35 groundball victory while going 16-for-28 at the faceoff x. The extra man unit converted on two of three man-up opportunities, and the Knights outshot the Colonels 66-37. 

Southern Virginia looks to make its winning streak four taking on Pfeiffer on Wednesday, Mar. 4. The opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
