Box Score BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's volleyball team went undefeated on its double-header weekend with a sweep over Elizabethtown College 25-17, 25-12, 26-24.
Paul Clark shined in the match with ten kills on ten total attempts giving him the perfect 1.000 hitting average while adding four service aces and three digs to his resume on the day. Samuel Candland had his best game of the season with seven kills on 12 total attempts giving him a .583 hitting percentage. Kaipo Tagaloa dished out a game-high 34 assists while also recording a game-high five service aces. McKay Walker dominated at the net with three blocks.
The Knights (10-3, 4-0 CVC) found themselves down 11-7 early in the first set before a kill from Clark sparked a 7-1 run to go up one point 13-12 over the Blue Jays (11-9, 2-4 CVC). After exchanging points and tying the set at 14, Southern Virginia used a 7-0 run led by two Clark kills extended the lead to six points 20-14. The Knights outscored Elizabethtown the remainder of the set 5-3 to take the early 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, Southern Virginia established a confident 9-4 lead at the beginning of the set led by three kills from Mark Stapley and McKay Walker. Following a service error by the Knights, Walker initiated a 5-0 to bring the new score to 14-5. The Blue Jays responded with a 4-1 run of their own to cut the deficit to six points 15-9. Southern Virginia used a final 10-3 run to close out the second set and go up 2-0 on Elizabethtown. Tyler McCreadie impressed with two service aces while the Knights outhit the Blue Jays .667 to .150.
The Blue Jays had hopes of a comeback early in the third set with a 13-7 lead, but Tagaloa and his three consecutive service aces brought life back into the Knights with a 7-0 run to tie the set at 14. Following a timeout by Elizabethtown, the Blue Jays responded with a 6-2 run of their own to jump to a 20-16 lead. After trading one point apiece, two kills from Clark and another service ace by McCreadie tied the game back up at 21. Each team went back-and-forth with points before the Blue Jays found themselves with the set point. Samuel Candland delayed the set victory with a kill off a Tagaloa assist, and another Clark kill leapfrogged Southern Virginia to a 25-24 lead. Candland used one final kill to complete the sweep for the Knights winning the final set 26-24.
The Knights held the advantage on service aces recording 14 to the Blue Jays' four while controlling the net out blocking Elizabethtown 8-6. The Knights outhit the Blue Jays .457 to .250.
Southern Virginia looks to keep its winning streak alive hosting Cal Lutheran in Knight Arena on Saturday, Mar. 7. The match is set for 2 p.m.
