VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.— The Southern Virginia University women's tennis team fell 5-4 to Virginia Wesleyan in their final match of the 2019-2020 season. With the loss, the women finish the year 4-5.
The Knights fell behind 2-1 in doubles, with the lone win coming at the No. 3 spot as Elizabeth Fuchs and Mercedes Matley were able to pick up an 8-1 victory.
The women's team had tough matches at all six singles spots, splitting them evenly with the Marlins.
Natalie Tetterton and Audrey Zalar were the first two off the court, competing hard but ultimately falling 6-4, 6-3, and 7-5, 6-2 respectively.
After these two matches, the Knights found themselves in a 4-1 hole, before Lauren Skousen topped her opponent at five, 6-4, 6-1.
Unfortunately for Southern Virginia, Morgan Blount's late push fell just short at the top spot, as she fell 7-6, 6-3 and the Marlins clinched the match.
The last two matches on resulted in wins for Southern Virginia, as Alyssa Sewell was able to come out on top at No. 2, 6-2, 7-6, before Annie Aldrich battled back from a set down to finish it off 2-6, 6-4, 10-4.
The Knights look forward to the 2020-2021 season, as they return four of their top six players, and add several solid recruits.
