Southern Virginia Women's Volleyball Grabs Two Wins Over Top Seeded William Peace and Meredith

RALEIGH, NC. — The Southern Virginia Women's Volleyball team traveled to Meredith College Saturday morning for a two-game conference quad-match taking on William Peace and Meredith.

The Knights avenged their early season loss to No. 1 William Peace, defeating the Pacers and the Avenging Angels in four sets, 3-1, re-claiming the No. 1 ranking in the league with their victories.

Game One: William Peace
In the first game against the Pacers, Brenna Clyde led all players with 14 kills, while Courtney Pinkston followed closely with 13. Emma Steiger had a solid outing, recording four aces and 32 digs.

Southern Virginia jumped to a comfortable 14-8 lead capped by an ace by Sage Matheny, before three errors by William Peace helped the Knights grab a 19-13 lead. A final 3-0 run with a kill by Clyde and a final ace by Pinkston put Southern Virginia up 1-0 with the 25-19 set victory.

After going up 11-7 in the second set led by two Clyde kills, both teams exchanged blows, trading leads until the Knights regained the lead 21-20 of kills from Jilane Pedersen and Courtney Pinkston.

Sage Matheny sparked a 4-0 run to wrap up the second set, putting the Knights up 2-0 with a 25-23 set win.

After a brief setback in the third set, William Peace denied being swept, forcing a fourth set.

Both teams went back and forth with the Pacers maintaining the 18-15 lead, but Sydney Hopkin ignited a 5-0 scoring run led by two Pinkston kills to regain the 20-18 advantage.

William Peace's Mackenzie Russell brought the team within set point off a kill, but Pinkston closed out the game with a kill and a final ace to lock in the 3-1 victory.

Game Two: Meredith:
Southern Virginia came out confidently in the second game against the Avenging Angels, going ahead 7-3 led by three kills from Clyde.

Pinkston closed out the first set with a kill and a solo block leading the team to a first set victory 25-15.

The second set saw both teams knotted up at 11 midway through the set before Meredith went ahead 19-15 after a three score run, but the Knights regained the lead later in the set led by a barrage of Pinkston kills, making the new score 21-20.

Meredith quickly grabbed the lead again, going up 22-21, but the Knights refused to go away easily, using a final four score stretch led by three consecutive Sage Matheny aces to take the second set 25-22.

After falling in the third, Southern Virginia had their eyes set on closing out the game, jumping ahead 14-11 after a four-point scoring run. The Knights later extended their lead to seven points, 21-14, with a final Emma Steiger Ace.

The Avenging Angels closed the gap to three points, 21-18, following four consecutive points by Meredith. Pinkston and Clyde stopped the bleeding going back up 23-18 before Ashley Torbenson and Sydney Hopkin wrapped up the match with back-to-back kills.
